A RELATED CREATIVE PROJECT

The Clock Projects

A creative journey through handmade clocks, fictional clock worlds, and screen-based experiments in telling time.

The Physical Clocks

I’ve been exploring clockmaking since 2009, with a focus on making clocks that are not only functional but also interesting and imaginative. Over the years, I created clocks using wood, plexiglass, photographs, and just about any material that inspired me.

Many of these creations can be seen on my website, Out of the Box Clocks (OutOfTheBoxClocks.com).

A Fictional Clock World

After several years of designing physical clocks, I decided to try writing fiction as a way to explore ideas that I could not easily bring to life myself.

The result was a story filled with fascinating concepts centered on a world of unusual clocks. There were clocks that used color or music to tell time, clocks based on a ten-hour system, time-based food, and even clocks in the form of clothing or animals. Some of these ideas were purely fantastical, while others seemed achievable.

Graphic Clocks

Two concepts, in particular, captured my imagination. The first was Graphic Clocks—clocks generated dynamically on a screen through computer code.

Working with my brother, a programmer, I designed an app that brought these clocks to life.

Video Clocks

The second concept was Video Clocks, in which video is used to represent and communicate time.

I was fascinated by the endless possibilities for expressing time visually, conceptually, and creatively through moving images.

A New Direction

In 2015, I stopped making physical clocks and shifted my attention entirely to exploring these screen-based clock concepts.

Examples of both Graphic Clocks and Video Clocks can be found on TheVideoClock.com.

The Clock Projects shares the same spirit as Wilkinstein's Vacation: playful ideas, visual experiments, and creative concepts brought together online.
